About El Salvador's Waiting Child Program

In El Salvador, the Waiting Children include older children, boys ages 10-14 and girls ages 12-14, healthy or with medical needs. Some sibling groups in this age range are available. As you begin the process of building your family through adoption, we encourage you to consider adopting a waiting child.

There is a great need within the country to find homes for children who are older or who have a medical need. Some of these children have been abandoned since a young age, others were placed in an orphanage because parents passed away and there are those with a condition that classifies them as having a special need. There are currently a large number of older children who are eager to find their eternal families. It is our prayer that these eternal families are eager to find these children as well.

While El Salvador does have a Waiting Children program and a list of the children, photographs of these children are not provided and updates are sent out only twice every year. OPA (La Oficina Para Adopciones) is the governmental organization in El Salvador that makes decisions about photographs, bi-annual updates and matches children with families. Through our Waiting Children program, you will receive a description of these children, including gender, age, health and any special needs.

The El Salvador Waiting Children Program is open to older children and / or those with medical needs adoptions. It is open to girls ages 12 and above or boys ages 10 and above, healthy or with medical needs. Sibling group are also available. Some younger children with moderate to severe special needs are available for adoption. Older children usually fall into the Waiting Children category, even if they do not have a special need. This is due to very limited number of requests for older children.

We have a number of children waiting to be adopted. If you would like more information about the children currently available, please enter or request the password or contact your family coordinator.

The Country of El Salvador

The Republic of El Salvador is the smallest country in Central America and is rich in history and culture. Bordering the Pacific Ocean on the south, Guatemala on the west and Honduras to the north, this country has beautiful beaches and a warm tropical climate. The country is situated on a fertile volcanic plateau and produces lush green vegetation. The “Land of Volcanoes” is one of the most fertile areas in Central America producing coffee, sugar, corn, rice, beans, oilseed, cotton, sorghum, and seafood. With its beautiful, volcanic black sand beaches, many surfers are drawn to try the waves off the Pacific coast. Over 300 rivers flowing through the countryside.

The governments of the United States and El Salvador enjoy such strong diplomatic and economic ties that the national currency in El Salvador is the U.S. dollar. El Salvador declared independence from Spain in 1821 and from the Central American Federation in 1839. In 1992 the rebels and government officials signed a treaty ending a long civil war that claimed over 75,000 lives.

The children in the orphanages of El Salvador are relinquished for adoption for various reasons. Some of the children are true orphans or were abandoned. In some cases children may live in the orphanages because their families are unable to care for them due to illness or poverty.
