How Does Adoption Work?

When considering adoption, you have a right to counseling to help you make your decision. This counseling should include talking through alternatives to adoption, legal processes, and your options regarding the specifics of your adoption plan. If you decide upon adoption, your counselor will show you books that the adoptive parents have made and you can choose the adoptive parents for your child.

Your counselor will help you make other decisions about your adoption plan. Some of the many questions we will talk about with you are:
  • Do you want to meet the adoptive parents?
  • How much contact do you want with them before the baby is born and at the hospital?
  • Do you want updates from them through the years as your child grows up?
  • Do you want an open adoption, which means that you know their name and address and can contact them directly without the agency in between?

If this seems overwhelming, please do not worry. Your counselor at America World will be there to help you through every step of the process.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him
and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6
